HSE and Russian Institute of Theatre Arts Launch Double-Degree Master’s Programme in Theatre Producing
In August 2024, HSE University and the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) signed a cooperation agreement, which marked the start of the double-degree Master’s programme ‘Theatre and Performing Arts Producer.’ The programme was developed jointly by the HSE Faculty of Creative Industries and the Stage Arts Producing and Management Department at GITIS.
The new educational programme ‘Theatre and Performing Arts Producer’ will provide expert knowledge in the fields of theatre studies, producing, management, and media communications. The joint format in this case involves studying at two institutions: the HSE Faculty of Creative Industries and GITIS’s Stage Arts Producing and Management Department. Graduates of the new programme will receive two diplomas. The programme starts this year, and applications are already open on the website (in Russian).
Andrey Bystritskiy
‘The Faculty of Creative Industries has always been known for its pioneering vision in education and its swift response to industry demands,’ emphasised its dean, Andrey Bystritskiy. ‘Today’s challenges at the postgraduate level in the creative industries are associated with interdisciplinarity and the opportunity to study key disciplines within highly specialised areas of knowledge. Our move towards networked forms of interaction with leading creative universities is aimed at forming new specialists with cross-cutting professional competencies that allow for fresh approaches to tasks. In launching the programme “Theatre and Performing Arts Producer,” the key element is exactly this mutual enhancement based on the merging of the two leading universities’ standards, so that together we can form entirely new specialists required by the industry.’
The Academic Supervisor of the programme is Oleg Ivanov, an expert from the Faculty of Creative Industries and Director of the Centre for Cultural Environment Studies at Moscow State University; the project leader is Andrey Borisov, General Director of The Moscow State Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre, and Head of the Stage Arts Producing and Management Department at GITIS.
Oleg Ivanov
‘In the theatre, everything should be wonderful—from a cloakroom ticket to the grand mystery that unfolds on stage in front of the audience. And theatre is always about searching for a new style and form, new texts and meanings. All of this is entirely connected with the professional work of a producer, which is the focus of our programme,’ said Oleg Ivanov.
Andrey Borisov
‘To be a successful and in-demand professional, three factors are necessary: passion, a kind of inner fire, a quality environment, and a bit of luck. The proposed master’s programme can “ignite” that passion, inspire, provide quality communication and teaching, and make luck inevitable!’ said Andrey Borisov. ‘We are shaping strong professionals who are ready to change the world around them and make creative breakthroughs!’
Prospective students can learn more about the educational process, the specifics of admission, and career trajectories in the theatre industry, as well as meet the instructors and programme directors at the Open Day scheduled for February 15, 2025, at 12 pm at the HSE Faculty of Creative Industries.
