‘HSE University Has Given Me a Solid Foundation in Both Theory and Practice’
Gideon Apomasu, from Ghana, West Africa, has recently graduated from the HSE University Master’s programme in Population and Development at the Faculty of Social Sciences. He talked to the HSE News Service about his impressions and experience of living in Moscow, being part of the HSE student community, and his future career plans.
Why I Chose HSE University
I was drawn to Moscow due to its global academic reputation and cultural depth. I chose HSE specifically because of its strong research orientation, international environment, and the opportunity to work closely with scholars like Alexander Larionov and Ilya Ermolin, who eventually became my research tutor and supervisor. Prof. Larionov’s classes were always insightful, intellectually stimulating, and practical. He had a unique way of helping students think critically and align academic work with real-world applications.
HSE’s interdisciplinary approach and global outlook made it the perfect fit for my academic and career aspirations
My Studies
The most difficult part was the language barrier, especially during my first year. While HSE offers English-language programmes, navigating daily life in Moscow often requires some command of Russian. Over time, I improved and adapted, but the early phase was definitely challenging.
I was most surprised by how technologically advanced and organised the city is. From public transportation to digital services, Moscow is incredibly modern and efficient. It challenged some of my preconceived ideas and made settling in easier than I expected.
I particularly enjoy research-based subjects, especially those focused on governance, public policy, and international development
These courses allow me to explore practical problems using academic frameworks and enhance my ability to critically analyse real-world issues.
My Extracurricular Activities
I participated in volunteering programmes organised by international student groups, and I occasionally played football with friends on campus. These moments helped me balance the demands of university life.
I was part of HSE’s international student community and an ambassador of HSE Africa Connect
I attended events, joined cultural exchange activities, and took part in peer mentorship sessions where senior students supported new international students.
This summer, I plan to relax a bit, reflect on my academic journey, and begin applying for internships or entry-level roles in development and policy research. I also want to visit a few more cities in Russia before leaving.
I had the opportunity to travel to St Petersburg, Obinisk, Krasnordar, and Stavropol, which was a breathtaking experience. The architecture, museums, and atmosphere were phenomenal. I also visited Kazan for a short while, which gave me insight into Russia’s cultural diversity.
Life in Moscow
What I appreciated most was the diversity and energy of the city.
Moscow is a vibrant, dynamic city with a mix of history, innovation, and opportunity
Living here gave me access to excellent libraries, cultural experiences, and meaningful connections both inside and outside the university.

I loved visiting Gorky Park and VDNKh for relaxation and casual meet-ups with friends. For studying, I preferred the HSE Library and the Zaryadye Park underground media centre, which offered both peace and inspiration.
My Career Plans
I’m passionate about working in international development, policy analysis, or governance reform, especially focusing on Africa.
My goal is to join an organisation where I can apply my research skills to influence policymaking and sustainable development
HSE University has given me a solid foundation in both theory and practice. The academic exposure, coupled with mentoring from professors like Alexander Larionov, has refined my ambitions. I now feel more confident about pursuing advanced research or professional work that tackles real-world development challenges.
