HSE Seeks New Ideas for AI Agents: Initiative Competition Launched

HSE University is inviting researchers and lecturers to present concepts for new digital products based on artificial intelligence. The best projects will receive expert and technological support. Applications are open until December 19, 2025.

An HSE open ideas competition has been launched to form new teams for the Strategic Technology Project (STP) ‘Multi-Agent Platform of AI Solutions for Industry-Specific Tasks’ under the Priority 2030 programme. Participants may include researchers, lecturers, and university staff interested in creating digital products powered by artificial intelligence.

Elena Odoevskaya

‘Artificial intelligence, as a cross-cutting technology, is an essential part of digital product solutions. The uniqueness of our project lies in bringing together the expertise of researchers in AI and in sector-specific fields to form unified product teams. Even in the first year of the STP’s implementation, we managed to launch several AI agents on a single platform, and we do not intend to stop there. I invite our researchers, experts, and developers to join the project team,’ noted Elena Odoevskaya, HSE Vice Rector.

The STP develops an ecosystem of industry-focused AI agents and the infrastructure for their development, testing, and implementation. The platform already makes it possible to significantly reduce the timeframes and costs of creating new solutions: teams use ready-made modules, a shared data library, and integration mechanisms, allowing them to focus on domain logic and user value. The developed AI agents interact with one another, forming a unified technological space.

The competition is aimed both at established teams with experience in AI, software development, and data analysis, and at initiative groups with deep subject-matter expertise but without a technical background. The main requirement is that the idea must be aimed at creating a digital product for real users—university staff and students, or external clients.

The creators of selected projects will receive access to the platform for developing and hosting AI solutions, consultations from interdisciplinary experts, support in forming product teams, and guidance from the STP leadership.

Applications may be submitted here until December 19, 2025 (website in Russian).

A New Section on AI and a Prizewinning Paper: Early-Career HSE Researchers Take Part in IEEE EDM Conference

The 27th IEEE International Conference of Young Professionals in Electron Devices and Materials (EDM) has taken place in the Altai Republic. This year, researchers from HSE University presented the results of their research and were involved in organising a new section on artificial intelligence. A paper by HSE master’s student Rodion Sidorenko was awarded third place in the research paper competition at the conference.

‘AI Enables Researchers to Tackle More Complex and Important Problems’

In late July 2026, Dmitry Rybin, a graduate of the HSE Faculty of Mathematics who is now working in China, used ChatGPT to disprove a longstanding mathematical hypothesis. In an interview with the HSE News Service, he discussed AI's ability to make discoveries in mathematics, reflected on his time at HSE University, and spoke about his doctoral research at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

HSE Initiates Development of Ethical Standard for Anthropomorphic Robots

Beyond technological solutions, the development of anthropomorphic robotics also demands ethical ones. In July 2026, the HSE Institute for Robotics Systems hosted a foresight session dedicated to developing an Ethical Standard for Anthropomorphic Robotic Complexes. Representatives from businesses, government bodies, scientific organisations, and universities gathered to discuss key ethical and legal issues surrounding the development of anthropomorphic robotic complexes. The main outcome of the meeting was a draft of the Ethical Standard.

Physicists at HSE University and FIAN Discover Way to 'Photograph' Sound for Testing Materials Used in 6G Communications

Researchers at HSE University, in collaboration with colleagues from the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FIAN), have developed a method for rapidly determining how firmly a film is bonded to a substrate. This is important for the creation of ultrahigh-frequency acoustic filters, which are key components of next-generation 5G and 6G communications. For the first time, researchers have succeeded in measuring the lateral rigidity of the bond between a two-dimensional material film and a substrate in this way. The study results have been published in Applied Physics Letters.

AI for Doctors: HSE Faculty of Computer Science Delivers Course for Russian University of Medicine Students

In June 2026, the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) completed a course on the use of artificial intelligence in medicine for first-year Paediatrics students at the Russian University of Medicine. The course was delivered with support from a grant awarded to HSE University under the Artificial Intelligence federal project, part of the national project ‘Data Economy and the Digital Transformation of the State.’

HSE University to Launch New AI Supercomputer

HSE University is preparing to launch its second supercomputer. The new cluster will be primarily dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) workloads and will complement the existing cHARISMa supercomputer. It is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2026.

HSE MIEM Students to Develop Two Satellites from Scratch for Orbital Experiments

The devices, created by student teams, will conduct space research on the properties of promising solar cells, on-board energy storage systems, and serial electronics for student satellites.

Biologists Discover Unique Properties of MiR-93-5p MicroRNA in Prostate Cancer

Researchers at the International Laboratory of Microphysiological Systems of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology investigated how different isoforms of the same microRNA influence gene function in prostate adenocarcinoma. The study found that in some cases, microRNAs can reinforce each other’s effects by targeting and suppressing the same genes. This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.

Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian

Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'

Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.
