The HSE Faculty of Law and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts presented the results of the joint project ‘Law in Painting.’ The project aims to show the different aspects of interaction between law and art, to find common grounds between them, and to clarify the legal content of works of art.

An interactive calendar was developed as part of the project. Twelve paintings from the Pushkin Museum collection were selected for the calendar, reflecting legal concepts and demonstrating the importance of law in society and state activities. The paintings selected for the calendar featured works by Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and other artists.

Project participants immersed themselves in the legal regulation of different eras and studied a variety of historical and legal material. While working on the project, many prospective scientists, who also took part, changed the topics of their dissertations, now focusing on the problems of transporting valuable art.

Vadim Vinogradov

Professor Vadim Vinogradov, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Law, noted that the joint project showed that law is often the foundation of art, and can be a hidden subtext of a piece. To understand this, one requires a deep dive into the history and legal context of the era depicted on the canvas. The power of art, in his opinion, was clearly manifested during the project: the participants were often distracted from studying the legal elements of the painting, becoming more interested in art studies.

‘We discovered that law and art overlap, and this study may help viewers to better understand these masterpieces. Law itself is art and an important part of culture,’ believes Vadim Vinogradov.

Ilia Doronchenkov

Ilia Doronchenkov, Deputy Director for Research at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, believes that the project turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful friendship. He commented that it was it was extremely interesting to see how art historians and lawyers collaborated, each with their own professional language, to produce such vibrant and fascinating results.

In his opinion, the project participants successfully combined the language of artistic symbols with precise legal language. He noted that when studying a painting, one should understand not only the creative process, but also the interaction between the author and the customer, the desires of the client, and symbolic messages of the creator.

Following the results of the ‘Law in Painting’ project, HSE University plans to launch a training course.
