Why Understanding of Texts Worsens with Age
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain, HSE University, have found that to predict semantic relations between words when reading, older adults use their knowledge of the world instead of grammar more often than young adults. Reliance on the meaning of individual words instead of accurate grammar analysis allows for faster information processing, but sometimes causes misinterpretations. The study has been published by the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.

On November 4-6, 2021, the 14th Kyujanggak International Symposium on Korean Studies took place. This is one of the world’s most prestigious academic Korean Studies gatherings, attracting leading experts from various countries. Elena Khokhlova, Associate Professor of the HSE School of Asian Studies, presented the results of her research at the symposium. This academic year, HSE University launched the first online master's programme ‘Master of Computer Vision’ supervised by Professor Andrey Savchenko. Alexander Rassadin, graduate of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science (HSE Nizhny Novgorod) and active participant of many CV projects, is delivering the course ‘Deep Learning for Computer Vision’ as part of the curriculum for this new programme. Alexander told us how he once wrote an algorithm for robot movement, the moment he realized what his dream job was and why analyzing sports games is more interesting than predicting a tsunami.

HSE Student Team Wins Grant in Masters of Hospitality Competition
The all-Russia competition, a project of the Russia — Land of Opportunities presidential platform, saw the students compete with other teams of young contestants. The team led by Alexander Aksyutin, a master’s student of the HSE Graduate School of Business, received a grant of 1.4 million Russian rubles, which the team plans to spend on a social project to promote tourism in Voronezh Oblast.

Ten universities and institutes have announced a partnership to construct an electron-positron collider in order to study the production and properties of charmed particles and tau leptons. The new experiment will be part of the Super C-Tau Factory project. It was founded by two international teams and eight from Russia, including HSE University.
