Leading research fellow of IGITI and the head of the Research Centre for Contemporary Culture Natalia Samutina took part in the international symposium "Theorizing Anime: Invention of Concepts and Conditions of Their Possibility", held in Tokyo on November 16-17, 2019.
Exploring Sublime Imperfections: How the Non-perfected is Framed as Beneficial
In September, the Research Centre for Contemporary Culture, an interdisciplinary unit inside the HSE Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities, held a seminar on ‘Analysing “informal” practices in (digital) cultural economies’. Delivered by Dr Ellen Rutten, Professor of Literature at the University of Amsterdam, the seminar focused on terms that allow us to more consciously talk about modern cultural economies. In an interview with the HSE News Service following her seminar, Dr Rutten spoke about Sublime Imperfections project, her other current research work, and ongoing collaboration with HSE.

On April 2, official award ceremony was held to celebrate staff of Higher School of Economics with "Aknowledgement" medals. The paper is titled "An eighteenth-century theme park: museum-reserve Tsaritsyno (Moscow) and the public culture of the post-Soviet metropolis" and discusses history of the Tsaritsyno Park in Moscow and museum-reserve. Russian Sincerity Today – A Conversation with Professor Ellen Rutten
On May 23, Ellen Rutten, Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Amsterdam, delivered a lecture at HSE on her new book, ‘Sincerity after Communism’. An expert on Slavonic literature and culture, Professor Rutten is involved in numerous projects, including the Digital Emotions group, Sublime Imperfections, and ‘Russian Literature’, a journal where she serves as editor-in-chief.

Natalia Samutina participated in the seminar and conference in the Netherlands
Natalia Samutina invited as a guest lecturer to the University of Amsterdam. At the EAST Seminar on 11 November, she presented her research in the framework of the project " Participatory Cultures: Post-socialist new media practices". On 12 November and 13 November, Natalia Samutina participated in the conference "European Fan Cultures 2015" at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
A new issue of Laboratorium journal guest-edited by Natalia Samutina and Oksana Zaporozhets
A new issue of the Laboratorium journal (Russian review of social research) guest-edited by Natalia Samutina and Oksana Zaporozhets came out of print. This issue of Laboratorium features a special section dedicated to street art or, more broadly, to vernacular images in the contemporary urban environment. The article by Natalia Samutina and Oksana Zaporozhets “Berlin, the City of Saturated Walls” and reviews of the Center junior research fellows Alisa Maximova and Alexandra Kolesnik are published in this issue. Natalia Samutina and Boris Stepanov participated in conference at Paris-Sorbonne University
Natalia Samutina and Boris Stepanov participated in the international conference "Publishing differently. Small publishers, independent journalists and bloggers in Russia" at Paris-Sorbonne University (October 1–2, 2015). The purpose of the conference was to analyse these independent, critical channels of publication in present-day Russia. Who produces this different material? What civic and political alternatives do they represent? What conflicts and compromises exist between them and the dominant players? To answer these questions, presenters doscussed and analysed alternative publishing channels in Russia, in journalism, publishing or blogs. The aim was to analyse not only their break with the dominant patterns but also the compromises and hybrid situations that arise from their mutual relationship, as well as to examine the emergence of alternative publications since the final decades of the Soviet Union.

On March 3-5, Natalia Samutina and Oksana Zaporozhets participated in the workshop "Current Research on Post-Socialist Cities in East Central Europe: Transformations of Public Urban Spaces after 1989 – Agents, Practices and Strategies" at The Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe, Marburd. They presented a paper "Parks as reinvented public arenas in Post-Socialist cities: the case of Tsaritsyno Moscow". See the workshop programme.

Natalia Samutina Participates in Theme Park Conference in Mainz
International Interdisciplinary Conference ‘Time and Temporality in Theme Parks’ was organized at Gutenberg University (Mainz, Germany) on September 18-20. The conference consisted of several panels focused on a wide range of topics: theme parks in the U.S., theme park theory, urbanism in American imagery, and more.
