The Cosmoscow International Contemporary Art Fair was held in September in the Central Manege. Six graduates and a student of the HSE Art and Design School presented their works at the event. Yulia Yusma, Director of HSE ART GALLERY supervised the projects.

Andrey Zakharchenko, who holds a master’s degree from the Faculty of Management (now the HSE Graduate Business School) and is the founder and director of the Standard Trade logistics company, told Success Builder how his deepest crisis led him to success, the nature of trade relations with China and what helped his team achieve record indicators during the pandemic.

Global Innovation Index 2021 Unveiled
Russia has improved its position in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2021, ranking 45th among 132 economies and closing the distance to leading countries thanks to better performance in all areas of research, innovation, and creative activities. For the past several years, the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) at HSE University has provided advice on the research underlying the index. This year, ISSEK became one of the nine members of the GII Academic Partners Network.

In a series of events that ran from September 13–21, psychologists from the HSE University Centre for Psychological Counselling spoke to students about communication traps and establishing trusting relationships, the challenges of adapting to a new environment and the resources required to do so, the university’s emergency psychological service, and animal therapy. The event programme also included English-language events.

QS Rankings: HSE University Graduates in High Demand Worldwide
HSE University has placed in the top 250 universities worldwide in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings despite increased competition. A total of 786 universities were assessed for this year’s rankings—an increase over last year. The published list of 550 universities is also 10% larger than last year’s.

Its educational content is close to the practice-oriented on-site HSE master’s programme in Corporate Finance. However, the use of improperly trained AIs in important fields and attempts to use it to exercise control over people’s lives may pose a real threat in the near future. This was the topic of a seminar on ‘The Unexpected Threats of AI’ recently hosted by the HSE University Laboratory of Transcendental Philosophy.

European Values: From the Discovery of America to the First World War
The English-language course ‘Europe and the World, ca. 1500 to 1914’ has launched on Coursera. Its author, Andrey Iserov, Deputy Dean for International Affairs at the HSE Faculty of Humanities, examines a historical span of four centuries during which European states reached the peak of their economic, military, and political power. Students of the course will learn how the independence of Hispanic America by the mid-1820s influenced China, what caused the religious schism in Western Christianity in the 16th century, and how European colonial policy developed.

Competition to Launch Experimental Research Laboratories Remains Open Until September 30
The competition is open to research projects in the fields of biophotonics and ageing (biology, physiology, biomedicine, biostatistics, and bioinformatics). The competition is aimed at creating, supporting, and developing science and international-level schools at HSE University. The university is also working to develop modern infrastructure for its natural sciences cluster as part of its active involvement in global research.

Champagne and Unsanitary Conditions: Trade in Siberia 150 Years Ago
The increasing application of law in various spheres of life in the Russian empire promoted trade regulation and influenced everyday trade practices—even in remote regions. Tradespeople, in turn, tried to limit the application of new regulations while using laws to serve their own interests. HSE University has hosted a seminar on trade in Siberia in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
