On August 20, the second online HSE Summer University came to an end. Students from 22 universities in 13 different countries enrolled in its courses. The Summer University 2021 was a truly international event, and while it was a little different from previous ones, it was no less unique.

Classes in the new academic year will take place on site for students of all HSE University campuses. Existing COVID safety precautions will remain in effect.

This spring, ICEF graduate Oleg Bezumov joined the list of HSE alumna named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 rating for 2021, winning in the Finance and Investment category. Alaa N. Assaf is a doctoral student at HSE University’s Faculty of Law. In addition to doing research for his PhD thesis, he teaches undergraduates. Alaa has shared his thoughts on studying international law, life in Moscow, and what he misses about teaching in person.

Researchers from the HSE Centre for Language and Brain and their Russian and American colleagues have become the first to compare expressive and receptive language abilities of Russian children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at different linguistic levels. Their work helped them refute the hypothesis that children with ASD understand spoken language less well than they produce it. The study was published in Research in Developmental Disabilities.

Russia has 3.5 million people in creative occupations and 2.7 million employed by creative industries. IQ.HSE used data by the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) to see how much these two figures overlap and how creative employment is different from creativity. Having assessed Moscow's creative economy, the experts have broadened their scope to Russia at large. The findings are published in the inaugural digest of the Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Centre.

Olga Shikhantsova is a Bachelor’s graduate from the Faculty of Economic Studies (FES) and a Master with a degree in Financial Economics, ICEF. In the early spring of 2021, she joined the SpeedInvest venture capital fund as a Principal with a focus on seeding Fintech. In May, Olga was included on the Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list in the Finance and Investment category. Creators are also part of the job sector. Their work is increasingly oriented around commercial activities and in the pursuit of economic goals. As such, the organization of artists’ professional work and the motivations behind it are by no means unique. Rather, they straddle the line between ‘aesthetic’ and ‘market’ concerns.
