Institute of Education: From Extensive Growth to Quality Development
The first meeting of IOE Expert Committee, which includes six international experts in education from five countries alongside three Russian experts, was held on October 19-20. The Committee gave an independent assessment of the Institute's activity and recommendations for finalizing its development strategy until 2024.
Project 5-100 International Council Confirms HSE’s Leadership
From October 26-27, a regular meeting of the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100 was held in Kaliningrad. The academic institutions involved in the project presented the results of their work and plans for the upcoming period of their respective roadmaps.

Exhibition about 1968 Events Opens in HSE Building
A new exposition in the assembly hall of the HSE building on Staraya Basmannaya is dedicated to the events of August 1968: the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet troops. Here, you can see declassified documents from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union archives; leaflets and posters; amateur photos by railroad worker Josef Kut illustrating what was happening on the streets of Prague; and a ‘graphic diary’ by Czech artist Jiří Jirásek.

Global and National Trends in Higher Education Discussed at HSE
From October 24-25, the IX International Russian Higher Education Conference ‘Universities in Search of a Balance between New and Familiar Goals’ took place at HSE. Participants discussed issues concerning educational policies, including internationalization of education, bridging the gap between schools, universities and labour markets, as well as changes in the academic profession.

HSE Master’s Student Receives Grant for Developing Arctic Transport Platform Project
This project involves creating a prototype of a universal transport platform ‘SuperArctic+”, based on the results of studying existing and emerging technologies. The platform will be able to move on water, under water, on ice and on the ground.

HSE and Politecnico di Milano to Join Forces in Studying University Performance and Efficiency
A cooperation agreement was recently signed between HSE and Politecnico di Milano (Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering) to jointly embark on a large-scale study entitled Efficiency, Performance and Impact of Higher Education Institutions (EPI). According to the agreement, the IOE Laboratory for University Development will act as the principal R&D venue for this initiative, while Dr. Tommaso Agasisti, Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano and one of Europe’s most renowned experts in education economics, will take up overall project supervision.

For the second year in a row, the Higher School of Economics has improved its position in the QS EECA Rankings, placing 23rd among universities from emerging European and Central Asian countries.
HSE Rises in U.S. News Best Global Universities Ranking
The Higher School of Economics has significantly improved its position in the U.S. News Best Global Universities subject ranking in mathematics, placing 107th this year. HSE also rose in the U.S. News Best Global Universities institutional ranking, as well as the social sciences and public health subject ranking.

Spiritual Importance of Russian Culture for European History
International Laboratory for the Study of Russian and European Intellectual Dialogue was established at HSE in 2017 with the purpose of showcasing the Russian philosophy, literature and art, and focusing on its universal spiritual significance for the fate of Europe and Russia. HSE News Service has talked to Leonid Luks, Academic Supervisor of the laboratory, about the place of Russian culture in the world and the research the laboratory is undertaking.
